Annapolis , Maryland – The Bay Theatre Company, the professional theatre of Annapolis, opens its fifth season with Ira Levin’s Deathtrap. One of the most popular shows ever to run on Broadway, this ingeniously constructed play combines shocks and thrills with spontaneous laughter. Ira Levin, whose extensive theatre and film credits include Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives, is known for his brilliant dialogue and inventive plots. Deathtrap was his longest running Broadway hit, as well as a successful film.

Set in the Connecticut home of Sidney Bruhl, a well-known playwright, Deathtrap tells the story of an eager student who mails Mr. Bruhl a brilliant script for a murder mystery. Bruhl, who has not had a hit show for some time, devises a plan with his wife to invite the young writer to collaborate with him on the play. After Clifford, the writer, arrives at the Bruhl’s house, the plot begins to twist and turn with the speed of a rollercoaster. The gripping story unfolds as murder plots both real and imagined are seemingly revealed and concealed again. The suspense enthralls as the play builds to a startling conclusion.

Jim Gallagher, of Annapolis, returns to The Bay Theatre stage as Sidney Bruhl. Travis Atkinson, a recent Cornell graduate now residing in Arlington, plays the clever Clifford. Antoinette Doherty, of Derwood, Maryland, last seen in Bay Theatre’s Crimes of the Heart, portrays Myra, Sidney’s wife. Lucinda Merry-Browne, The Bay Theatre’s Artistic Director, and Paul Danaceau of Rockville, Maryland round out the cast as the neighboring psychic and the visiting solicitor. The director is James Phillips, of Beltsville, Maryland, with directing credits from Catholic University, Wooly Mammoth, Olney Theatre, Moorhead State University, and Capitol City Improv.

Deathtrap opens September 29 and plays through November 4, 2006. Tickets are $22 for general admission, $17 for students (with student ID) and seniors (age 65 or over). Group discounts are available. Performances are held Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. A final matinee of Deathtrap will be performed on Saturday, November 4 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online (www.baytheatre.org) or reserved by phone (410) 268-1333 or email ( reserve@baytheatre.org).
