From December 14 through January 19, The Bay Theatre Company will stage Apocalyptic Butterflies by Wendy MacLeod.  In this offbeat comedy, set at Christmastime, Hank and Muriel must adjust to life as new parents to a seven-week-old baby girl who has yet to be named.  Under the pressures of marriage, parenting, holiday gift-giving, eccentric in-laws and outside temptations, resentment has taken the place of enjoyment for this young couple.  With humor and tenderness, this imaginative young playwright helps them to emerge from the enveloping stress, and reminds us that Christmas is a celebration of birth and life.  Just as a beautiful butterfly hatches from its cocoon, this funny and sweet play bursts with joy and light.  Audiences are advised that the play contains adult language and themes.

MacLeod explores the transformations that occur when a couple becomes a family.  Hank craves love and attention, Muriel feels burdened and undervalued, and Hank’s parents, Francine and Dick, travel to the beat of a very different drum.   Looking elsewhere for comfort, Hank becomes more confused, and just when things can’t get any worse, they do.  Only when Hank and Muriel face each other without outside influences are they able to discover compassion and reawaken their love.

Apocalyptic Butterflies features two Equity actors, Brandon McCoy, as Hank, and Faith Potts, as Francine.  Brandon McCoy, a resident of Silver Spring, recently appeared in Ambition Facing West at the Theater Alliance in Washington, D.C.  For Bay Theatre, he played Alan in Picnic last season, and is the senior Bay Theatre Studio faculty member.  Faith Potts, of Alexandria, has performed throughout the D.C. area, appearing frequently at Arena Stage and Wayside Theatre; she makes her Bay Theatre debut.  Also new to Bay Theatre are Kate Williams, of Silver Spring, in the role of Muriel, and McKenzie Bowling, of Baltimore, playing Trudi.  Steve Beall, of Columbia, returns to the Bay Theatre stage as Dick; he previously appeared in Bay Theatre’s production of Arms and the Man.  Jennifer John, a graduate of the MFA in Directing program at Catholic University, guest directs.  Tupper Stevens is the Equity Stage Manager.

Apocalyptic Butterflies opens Friday, December 14, 2007 and plays through Saturday, January 19, 2008.  Tickets are $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors (age 65 or over) and $17 for students (with school ID).  Gift certificates and group rates are available.  Regular performances are scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m.  There will be four Thursday evening shows, at 8:00 p.m. on December 20, December 27, January 10 and January 17; December 20 will be Pay What You Can Night.  A special New Years Eve matinee will be offered on Monday, December 31 at 3:00 p.m. with a complimentary wine and cheese reception before the show.  Two performances are scheduled on Saturday, January 19, a matinee at 3:00 p.m. and an 8:00 p.m. show.  Post-show discussions with the director and actors will be offered on December 30 and January 6.  Audience members are also invited to a complimentary reception opening night.  Tickets may be purchased online (www.baytheatre.org) or reserved by phone (410-268-1333) or email (reserve@baytheatre.org).  MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express are accepted.  Holiday gift certificates are also available.
